Why I Began My First Mom Blog

NOTE: This article is from an old blog Golden wrote on from 2017 to 2019. It was called Mama Wants an RV. The blog has since expired but the memories remain. Thanks for reading!

Original Post from March 24, 2018

After years of dreaming about blogging, I finally have a mom blog! Mom blogging is not as much work as I thought it would be and it’s now a blessing to me every day.

In this article I cover why I began blogging, how it keeps me accountable, what my family thinks, hurdles I’ve overcome, and what my plans are for the future. My hope is that you will begin a mom blog too! I’m sure you have just as many stories to tell in your own quirky way.

Blogging has changed the way I look at things, especially on the internet. Rather than seek a giant website for tips, tricks, and general news, I can go to thousands of smaller sites built by people just like me. People who work hard and want to bless others with all that they have found.

I hope this post blesses you today.

Why Mom Blog?

I’ve spent years accumulating stories. They’re written on the pages of journals, inside Bible study books, on the backs of pictures, inside cards, on notepad paper, and yes, even a few napkins. They’re typed on my computer, stored on hard drives, saved in digital notebooks, and stamped in my smart phone’s memo pad. They’re hanging inside my head, knocking on the door of my heart, racing back and forth through the spaghetti in my brain. They want out desperately.

For me, mom blogging wasn’t as much a choice as a necessity. I have so much to say yet I struggle getting the words out in a face-to-face conversation. My journals and hard drives know the stories, but few others do. Blogging is a way to tell the world what I’ve experienced, why it matters, and how I’ve grown as an individual. It gives me a chance to tell the world “hello” and let others know what I believe. Then it connects me with those who have similar beliefs and goals. I get to make new friends.

Then there are all the ideas floating around inside my head which need to be released. I enjoy so many things and I’ve accumulated much knowledge over the years. What a shame it would be not to share all that God has entrusted to me. Blogging is helping me do this better as I struggle to do it in everyday life. It forces the risk taker to come out of me and have a little courage to say what I really want to say. Granted this is cyberspace, but I believe mom blogging will help me do this better in person too.

Staying Accountable While Blogging

Good blogging is a commitment. Whether I’m writing one article a month, week, or each day, I need to stay faithful and post regularly. Whether I have one, ten, hundreds, or thousands of readers, I need to respect their time. While I’m working to stay consistent, I’m also working to remain helpful and encouraging.

Following other bloggers is essential to becoming a better mom blogger personally. When I think of the hard work so many people have put into compiling useful information into one article, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. I’m working to do the same as I grow my blog.

Adding social media accounts will also keep me accountable to an audience. Plus, the interaction will help me focus my articles on what others want to hear about.

Family and Mom Blogging

I blog because I love hearing my husband laugh at my stories. I take great joy in seeing my daughter scroll through her phone reading stories of our lives on the internet. Our kids spend so much of their lives in front of screens, I might as well make sure some of the things they’re seeing is their own family history.

I am careful not to reveal our children’s personal information or share things that are not already common knowledge among our own family and friends. In fact, sometimes I am shocked by how much our teenagers choose to reveal about themselves online (via Facebook). They say more than I would ever share or want to be shared.

Registering for a domain and setting up a mom blog is relatively easy to do. Beginning to write content is another story. If you’re anything like me, you want your first article to be perfect before posting it. You fine-tune every detail until you are second-guessing yourself and wondering if you should start all over.

I’ve learned it doesn’t matter how many times I review a story, there is always room for improvement. I’ve stuck with the motto, “It’s better to post faithfully, then to post perfectly.” I can always make changes, but right now I simply need to focus on adding content and practice using the WordPress software. (Today we use Wix.)

Other hurdles have included forgetting to take pictures of a story I’m trying to retell. Now I take pictures throughout my day just in case I decide to share something related to my activities. It’s a great way to boost memory recall too.

My Future as a Mom Blogger

I am excited to share more stories and how-to sessions on my blog. In fact, I wouldn’t mind learning how to vlog (video blogging). I really like interviewing people and sharing other people’s stories too. Perhaps I will dabble in podcasts? Regardless, I’m going to work on keeping a daily notebook to recount outstanding moments and seeking out other bloggers from whom I may learn.

Eventually, I see my blog becoming an encouragement to many adoptive moms and even couples as I cajole my husband to join me in this endeavor. Some day when we are on the road this may be a good outlet for us.

I also would enjoy making an income through my blog, although, it is not my top priority. Adding value, offering encouragement, and inspiring others are most important to me now. I would love for another adoptive mom to read one of my stories and say, “Me too, I get it.” If I can offer comfort or support to anyone in their time of struggle, it will all be worth it.

So how about you? Are you ready to start mom blogging?
